Salt Lake City, UTAH – 21 JULY 2009 – The Off Broadway Theatre, celebrating 15 years of comedy, is pleased to announce the opening of The Pirates of Penzance, the famous light-parody and satire, by Gilbert and Sullivan on Friday July 31st. Curtain rises at 7:30 PM. Seating is reserved.
Originally written and premiered in 1879, The Pirates of Penzance is the story of a young lad, Frederic, who, on his twenty-first birthday, newly out of his pirate apprenticeship, soon finds out that though he has technically lived twenty-one years, he was born on leap year and is thus torn between his “sense of duty” to finish his indentures with the haggard lot of pirates (finishing at the age of 63) or to live a new life on the shores of Cornwall, England with the fair-maiden Mabel.
Frederic is played by new-comer, David Peterson. Mabel is played by Rivkah Steele, an Idaho resident, who also is debuting her talent at Off Broadway Theatre. Both David and Rivkah will be available for interviews; please call to schedule.

“Pirate’s was an immediate hit with audiences here in Salt Lake, over eight years ago,” said Eric Jensen, Off Broadway Theater’s founder, “it is a permanent part of our repertoire with the exciting and always-favorite physical comedy and top-notch acting from this year’s troupe”.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS:
Sphinx (The Mummy) is the oldest of the group. He’s definitely the leader and everyone respects him because of his great knowledge. He is well spoken and very bright. He is covered from head to toe in off-white bandages and has a very generic Mummy look. He may however have the Pharaoh hat we see in the Ten commandments.
Frankie (Frankenstein) as far as looks go, has the typical Frankenstein monster look, but since he has an abnormal brain he sounds a little like a valley girl. This is done because hopefully the audience will clue into the fact that he’s ditsy. He’s not effeminate, but he definitely does not have the voice we typically associate with Frankenstein monster. He has a flat top and bolts on the neck and should be played as though her were over-weight.
Barky (Wolfman), as a were wolf will look like the classic Lon Chaney wolf man with make up and hair around his face. He should not be attempted with a mask. A wig headpiece that goes around the head, and perhaps on the cheeks would be ideal, so that he can sing and also give expression. He should have a shirt and pants on but they should be ragged with little bits of fur sticking out. It would be great if he had wolf-man gloves and wolf-man feet. Barky is not stupid, he just doesn’t pay attention to what’s going on, on stage. He wants to be the wise cracker, but he’s not sharp enough. He is very likeable and loyal just like a faithful pet.
Bloods (Dracula), is the prankster of the group. He’s also the smart aleck. He loves these guys and deep down they love him too. But he acts sorta like the one of your friend’s older brothers, who just can’t help giving you are hard time. He’s not conceited persay, but because of the fact that he is so impressed with his own abilities, he can’t help but spurt them out as he speaks. Nobody really hates him, they just get annoyed with his personality that seems to take more than give. He should be a typical vampire with the cape and the gothic look. Fangs, black hair, and the whole nine yards. Probably NO Transylvainian accent.
